Caricatures.
Media: Pencil prelim
sketches scanned and redrawn with pressure-sensitive drawing tablet,
digital vector and paint programs,
emailed to you as pdf files.
Aesthetically, these are like what I did for 35 years
in political cartoons while working for various newspapers like Minneapolis
City Pages, the Madison (Wisconsin) Press Connection and
the Minnesota Daily, and on KMSP-TV, the local FOX television
affiliate's morning news show. They are funny but are drawn with a degree
of class and finesse, not the cheesy variety of folk or commercial style
"caricatures" drawn by the amateurs usually recruited to draw
at shopping malls, amusement parks and even state fair concessions.
Technically, these involve several steps: first, I draw a rough sketch
from the photos supplied by you. Then I refine the sketches to arrive
at the best result. Next, I scan the final sketch. I take that into
a vector drawing program and carefully draw a digital versionfrom it
which pays close attention to line quality. The line quality is highly
refined, very clean and thoughtfully varied. This can be done in black
and white or the additional step of adding color can be undertaken.
