Media: Watercolor markers on paper, scanned and emailed to you.

These are like what I do when I draw at events such as parties, trade shows, company picnics, bar or bat mitzvahs, festivals, fairs and so on.
They are carefully drawn but they are "one-offs" in which I make just one single best attempt at capturing a good likeness in a funny style. Drawing funny comes naturally to me, but often if I do several iterations they get funnier and funnier. So this doesn't produce the funniest version I could come up with, but it is still a lot of fun, and for many people they actually prefer this to the more extreme caricature.
If you look very, very closely, you can see that the line quality is slightly "shaky," not super-slick, not a perfectly "clean" line, but a lot of people find this endearing because it shows the human touch. It is reminiscent of Charles Schulz or Dr. Seuss, whose lines, if you look closely at them, have this less-than-perfect, un-mechanical quality. (Obviously if you get TOO shaky, it becomes just messy-looking!) Look at the samples and judge for yourself what you like and what you wish to spend.

"BETTER."

About Digital Realistic Line Drawings.
Media: Pressure-sensitive drawing tablet, digital vector and paint programs, emailed to you as pdf files.

These are highly finished drawings done very directly from the photos you supply to me. They are fairly realistic but somewhat like a comic book drawing as opposed to a simple illustration. I perfected my techniques for drawing with these digital tools while completing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Multimedia Design at the University of Minnesota several years ago. The line quality is very smooth and clean.
I can inject some degree of fun into them, but they are rather tame compared to what I can do when doing a full-blown caricature. Still, many people prefer these, especially when concerned about not offending the subject being drawn. These are "mild" as opposed to "wild."

"BEST."

Price: add $30 to price of digital line drawings.

About Digital Caricatures.
Media: Pencil prelim sketches scanned and redrawn with pressure-sensitive drawing tablet, digital vector and paint programs, emailed to you as pdf files.

These are like what I did for 35 years in political cartoons while working for various newspapers like Minneapolis City Pages, the Madison (Wisconsin) Press Connection and the Minnesota Daily, and on KMSP-TV, the local FOX television affiliate's morning news show. They are funny but are drawn with a degree of class and finesse, not the cheesy variety of folk or commercial style "caricatures" drawn by the amateurs usually recruited to draw at shopping malls, amusement parks and even state fair concessions.
These involve several steps: first, I draw a rough sketch from the photos supplied by you. Then I refine the sketches to arrive at the best result. Next, I scan the final sketch. I take that into a vector drawing program and carefully draw a digital versionfrom it which pays close attention to line quality. The line quality is highly refined, very clean and thoughtfully varied. This can be done in black and white or the additional step of adding color can be undertaken.
